Lately we have been working diligently to get food prepared for our trip. I just wanted to snap a couple of shots of the food that we have gotten for our trip. Now most of the breakfasts are done. We still have quite a bit of fruits though. These will most likely go into pancakes, which we have not finished yet... and then snack packs once those are all done.
Next Saturday we are planning on having a party with friends all day long and trying to get some of this stuff done. We hope next week to get lunches and dinners straightened out. So, until then... here are some pics of the foods we bought already. There is a lot that you might no see or I did not photo. Like our Savory Choice packets! YUM!

Very impressive dude! This is the part of the trip I have a hard time with. However, when I do my thru I will do the same as you and set up mail drops.
ReplyDeleteI also didn't realize that you can get the MH in the large buckets like that. Cool beans...
So, are you making up your meals as you go along or are you going by a list?
If you are compiling a list and if you wouldn't mind sharing it I would love to see it... :)
@stick13 - let me just overview something really quick. First it is all about preference. It depends on what you can stomach and how many times a week you can stomach it. Second, it can be cheap, but it can also cost a lot of $$$. Just stay tuned and I will do the best I can to show you what I am doing. We are having a party this Saturday to make food with friends... I will try to make a video of that as well... to showcase what choices have been made.
ReplyDeleteRead this for some intelligence food talk:

Then if you are looking at dehydrated foods, check out Costco where you can get a brand called "Shelf Reliance" in bulk and for cheaper. A whole AT trip would run about $600.
@Jolly Green Giant - have you bought from Shelf Reliance? I would take it that you have not, because those foods in the picture are THRIVE, which is the Shelf Reliance brandname. I thought it was just ironic that you said that and that is what I have!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up though!
I will be looking forward to your friends and food video. And I hear ya on the personal preference. I have been lucky that I can "stomach" many of the backpacker friendly meals that come prepackaged (MH, BP Pantry, etc...). However, I will be dehydrating some of my own foods as well as possibly using some of the prepackaged types.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I do like to study other peoples list and take from it what I can. I know there are plenty of others that enjoy this part of the "journey" more than I do so I search these out a little more extensively. (Now the gear thing I love... :)) If I could pay someone to deal with the food, I probably would...but of course I would have to go over it to make sure I had enough...
@stick13 - I have learned a lot so far... and hopefully more in the future. I will try and refrain from comments to much further about food, until I am on the trail and really pushing through my cuisine. But do stay tuned and I should be pumping out some Youtube this weekend. Oh... and I just quit my job today. So... just a couple more weeks until the end. UGH!!!
ReplyDeleteSorry about that. You're right - the picture speaks for itself. I commented from my cell which didn't afford full sized pictures while stuck for two days at an airport in Charleston SC. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteWhere did you purchase the THRIVE food?

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for posting this! This one post has answered about ten food questions I have been thinking about for months as we prepare to being backpacking this summer.
